Nobody chose the number 64
A is stacked. Each line has only two possible states: solid or broken. Six positions, two possibilities each, that makes 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2, so 64 combinations. Not 63, not 65. The arithmetic lands.

That is where the number of on your chart comes from. It was not fixed by a decision, it follows from a calculation centuries old. And since the count is closed, no 65th gate can ever appear.
The numbering is carried over as it stands
The arranges its 64 figures in a set order, called the King Wen sequence. Ra Uru Hu kept it untouched: 34 of the I Ching is gate 34 of your , hexagram 1 is gate 1, and so on for all 64.
What he changed is their layout. He spread them over the zodiac circle, 360° divided by 64, which gives 5.625° per gate. That division is what lets you say which gate a planet falls in: you measure its longitude on the circle and see which 5.625° slice it lands in. Because that circle is the zodiac, your star sign can also be read on your chart.
Worth keeping: the supplies the list and the numbers. Human Design supplies the position in the sky. Without the first, no ; without the second, no calculation.
The six lines become the six lines
A is read from the bottom up, the way a plant grows: the first line is the one at ground level, the sixth the one at the top. Human Design kept this reading direction to number the of a gate, and gave them roles:

And it is from these lines that your profile comes: two figures, the line of your Personality Sun and that of your Design Sun. A 1/3, a 4/6, a 5/1. Two storeys of , read in two different figures.
What Human Design does not carry over
This is where the two systems part, and the difference is one of nature, not of degree.
The traditional is an oracle: you draw the lines, with yarrow stalks or coins, and the figure you get answers the question you asked. It changes with every cast.
Human Design turns it into a fixed matrix. The are no longer cast: they are activated by the position of the planets at the moment of your birth, and that position will never move again. Your chart is not re-rolled.
In the same way, the texts of the , the Judgement and the Image, are not carried over as an interpretation of the . Human Design keeps the structure, the numbering, the order of the lines, and writes its own energy themes. It sorted Kabbalah the same way, keeping only one rule from it.
