Conscious and Unconscious

Conscious and Unconscious: the two calculations that make up your chart

Your rests not on one calculation but on two, made at two distinct moments. It is this duality that gives Human Design its unique depth: one part of you that you recognise immediately, and another that surprises you, sometimes for a lifetime. Understanding the difference between these two layers means understanding why you sometimes say « that’s not me » about behavior that others observe clearly in you.

The conscious calculation: the Personality (in black)

The first calculation is made for the exact moment of your birth. The precise position of the Sun, the Moon, the lunar nodes and the planets from Mercury to Pluto is calculated for that instant, and from it we determine which and which lines are activated.

These appear in black on your chart. They represent your Personality, what you consciously perceive as being « you ». Your recognizable character traits, your habitual tendencies, what you point to when someone asks you to describe yourself.

In technical terms, the Personality is associated with the , which resides in the . This crystal is your observing awareness, the one that watches, thinks and comments. In the vehicle metaphor we will come to below, it is the passenger.

The unconscious calculation: the Design (in red)

The second calculation goes back in time, roughly 88 degrees of solar arc before birth, which corresponds to about three months before you came into the world. At that stage of fetal development, the is completing its formation and the body is ready to receive consciousness.

A symbolic echo often mentioned: 88 days is almost exactly the orbital period of Mercury (87.97 days), the planet associated with the mind and communication. It is a resonance the Human Design tradition likes to point out, not the official rationale behind the calculation.

The planetary positions of that moment determine the shown in red on your chart. This is your Design, your biogenetic inheritance, passed down through the line of your grandparents. These traits are deeply written into your body, into your DNA, but you have no direct awareness of them.

The Design is associated with the , which organizes the physical form. It determines how your body works, reacts, moves, digests, perceives. It is not « you » in the sense you usually mean, it is your biological vehicle, with its own laws and its own rhythms.

The metaphor of the road and the tunnel

To grasp the difference between conscious and unconscious, picture two ways of traveling:

The conscious is sitting at the top of a hill overlooking a highway. You watch the cars go by, you recognise the models, you can count the vehicles, observe the traffic patterns. You have a clear, panoramic view. You can say: « Yes, I see that, I recognise it, it is familiar. »

The unconscious is going through a tunnel. You are in the vehicle, moving, but you see nothing of what is happening outside. Now and then an opening in the wall lets a flash of light through, a fleeting glimpse of what lies beyond, but the essential stays invisible. You act, you react, you function, but without knowing why. It is in that tunnel that some of your most powerful gifts are found… along with some of your greatest resistances.

The metaphor of the vehicle

Ra Uru Hu, the founder of Human Design, often used the image of a car to illustrate human mechanics:

  • The Design = the vehicle - The car itself, with its engine, its wheels, its bodywork. Your physical body, with its health, its reflexes, its biological needs. You do not choose your vehicle, it is given to you.
  • The = the driver - Located in the G Center, this mysterious principle holds the wheel. It determines the direction, the route, the encounters along the way. The Monopole draws to you the people, places and experiences that match your geometric trajectory.
  • The Personality = the passenger in the back seat - There you are, looking out of the window, commenting on the scenery, holding opinions about the driving… but not holding the wheel. And that is exactly how things are meant to work.

This image is often hard for the mind to accept, convinced as it is that it is in charge. But one of the deepest revelations of Human Design is precisely this: consciousness is not the driver.

Striped segments: bridges between two worlds

On some charts you will notice channel that are neither entirely black nor entirely red, but striped, alternating the two colors. These segments appear when the same gate is activated both by the conscious calculation AND by the unconscious calculation.

This is a relatively uncommon phenomenon, and it represents a bridge between your two natures. A doubly is an energy you have particularly rich access to: you live it consciously while being supported by its presence in your deep biology. It is a remarkable anchor, a part of you that you know AND that inhabits you at cellular level.

The trap of the mind: when the passenger wants to drive

The human mind, your conscious Personality, is an extraordinary tool. For research, analysis, communication, sharing ideas, philosophical reflection, it has no equal. As an outer authority (what you offer to others through your observations and your thinking), it is invaluable.

But here is the critical point: the mind must never serve as . It must never be the one making your personal decisions. When the passenger in the back seat grabs the wheel, the car leaves the road.

This is exactly what happens in what Human Design calls the . The Not-Self is the state in which the Personality tries to compensate for the weaknesses it perceives in the open (undefined) centres of the chart. The open Emotional Centre tries to avoid confrontation. The open tries to prove its worth. The open clings to what is no longer good for it. The open does not know when to stop.

Each has its own compensation strategies, and it is the mind that orchestrates them, convinced it is protecting the system while in fact steering it away from its correct trajectory. The result? Frustration, anger, or disappointment, the four themes, matching (Generator and Manifesting Generator share Frustration).

Reconciling conscious and unconscious

The work in Human Design is not about making the unconscious conscious (as in psychoanalysis), nor about ignoring the mind (as in some spiritual approaches). It is about putting each element back in its rightful place: letting the body (the Design) make decisions through , and allowing the mind (the Personality) to do what it is genuinely built for, which is to observe, understand, share and inspire.

When the passenger accepts that they are not driving, something remarkable happens: they finally begin to enjoy the journey. The scenery becomes more beautiful, the encounters more correct, the bends less frightening. Not because the road has changed, but because you have stopped fighting the direction your vehicle has been taking you in all along.

Your chart, with its interwoven black and red layers, is the truest portrait of this magnificent duality. Learn to read it, and you will learn to know yourself, in both your dimensions.
